Can Insomnia Cause Weight Gain?
February 08, 2007

A warm welcome to our new subscribers and a big "Hello" to all our loyal readers :-)

Can insomnia prevent you loosing weight?

Is there really a connection between your weight and your sleeping habits? The two don't seem to have anything in common, so how can that be? Further research suggests there is a connection. Insomnia can cause weight gain and gaining weight can cause insomnia! Here's why...

Sleep deprivation can cause hunger and lower your metabolic rate. This is because the body is trying to conserve energy. The hormone "cortisol' is released to counter the stress of being sleep deprived.

If your body is lacking sleep you may not be able to metabolise carbohydrates effectively. This results in more of your food being stored as fat. The level of sugar (glucose) in your blood stream may increase leading not only to weight gain but other diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

You'll feel a lot more lethargic when you've had insufficient sleep so you'll want to exercise less.

When the total hours of sleep are decreased, the body spends less time in the deep sleep phase. Deep sleep is where the repair on the body takes place and growth hormone is released. Growth hormone is a protein which regulates fat and muscle proportion. A lack of growth hormone can lead to poor muscle development and an inability to shed fat.

Conversely being overweight can cause you to loose sleep. Sleep apnea and snoring are proven to be more prevalent in overweight people (sleep apnea obesity)

Back pain can also result from carrying too much weight. Pain of any kind can keep us awake.

Being overweight has been linked with depression, depression can cause us or exacerbate insomnia.

So as you can see it's a vicious cycle, but one that can be broken.

I'm not going to give tips for losing weight here, there's plenty of resources on the web which will do that. The point is mainly to make you aware of the weight/sleep connection. However read this article on my blog which gives some different insights on the weight battle.

Don't forget EFT! Tapping on the acupuncture points can relieve hunger and be very handy when you're craving junk foods or chocolate!" Go to Getting Started with EFT and download the free manual, read through part 1. Then go to the Brad Yates site and click on the "E tappings" menu items on the top. Look for the "Food craving/I choose to be healthy" tapping exercise. Download this and use it when cravings attack!
