Why Do Babies Need A Sleep Schedule?
A baby sleep schedule or routine is important for every baby, even adults can benefit. Babies like to
feel secure in their environment and will relax and sleep better as a consequence. Make sure your baby goes to bed
at the same time each night and wakes up at the same time each morning. Have a few things you do each night before
bedtime, for instance give your baby a bath, read him a book. Doing these things will give your baby a sleep
schedule they can get used to and help them relax - read the article below..
Why do babies need a routine? Author Heidi Ayarbe
Babies, children, and adults live and thrive in consistent environments. Imagine, as an adult, if you go to
work, you find your desk has been moved from one side of the office to the other, your papers are scattered, and
nothing is where you left it. You'd probably be upset.
Babies and children need routine in their everyday world as much, or more, than an adult does. You might be able
to justify that all of that desk moving was a prank. A baby or child, though, would be clearly upset if things
didn't happen in the way she expected.
Even the most flexible adults have routines. Think about your daily schedule. Think about what you do every
morning. Do you shower? Do you brush your teeth after coffee? Do you have coffee everyday?
If part of your daily routine is missing, do you feel like your day has started off a little off course?
Giving your child a routine is the best gift you can give her. Routine and consistency build confidence in a
child.
It's obvious that sometimes the routine might vary if you have a babysitter or a dinner party. That's okay,
though, if a routine is set in place, your child will be able to deal with the variations from time to time.
“Routines provide your child with a sense of security, and they enable your child to have a sense of control in
a world governed by adult demands. Routines also give a framework in which to learn new skills" (Mindell p.65).
